New playground takes shape at SJAM elementary

Nov. 5 update: The equipment and rubber surface are in place (see top photo). The kids won’t have long to wait now.

Two arches forming a new play structure now rise above St. Joseph’s-Alexander McKay Elementary’s upper yard, almost exactly two years after parents at the school formed a committee to try and improve the concrete play area. Excavation work started last week and workers are aiming to finish the base before the frost arrives in earnest.

Volunteers have created an extensive Facebook site chronicling the project.

Pounding feet and personal bests

HALIFAX — Once again Maynard Street played a pivotal role hosting the Blue Nose Marathon. Over 5,800 runners ran north on the residential road on Sunday before doing different loops around the north end and Dartmouth depending on whether they were 5k, 10k, half-marathon or marathon racers.
